Comics Legend Ernie Chan Dies at 71

Ernesto "Ernie" Chan was an American comic book artist known for work published by DC and Marvel Comics, including many issues of Conan the Barbarian and Detective Comics.  Sometimes credited as Ernie Chua, Chan was born July 27, 1940 in the Philippines. He died Wednesday May 16th after a yearlong battle with cancer.

The Avengers Assemble at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood

My son and I were thrilled to see The Avengers during opening weekend at The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. The site of the world premiere, the theatre provides a peek into the private collection of Stan Lee, legendary co-creator of all of Marvel Comics' major superheroes. This exclusive display includes rare comic books, includingTales of Astonish—the very first appearance of Iron Man, original helmets of Thor and Loki from the film production of Thor, and a wide array of action figures and statues of Marvel's greatest heroes. Guests will also have the chance to pose with Tony Stark. Well, actually, it's The Madame Tussauds wax figure of the character portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. We had such a blast, we just may well go back a second time.

Manuscript Society Visits the Autograph Collection of the LA Public Library

Eleven members of the Los Angeles chapter of the Manuscript Society gathered at 10:00 AM on May 5th at Los Angeles' Central Library. Among those attending were incoming president Beverly Hill (pictured with Kevin Segall and Emma Roberts), Board members Dennis Shapiro, Michael Hecht, and Kevin Segall, as well as retired Disney archivist and past Board member Dave Smith, and Gary Milan, renowned for his Revolutionary War and entertainment collections.

Thanks to the organizing efforts of Kevin Segall, we were escorted into the Rare Book Room where Subject Specialist Emma Roberts laid out some treasures, among which were a 13th century manuscript in Latin (sold to the Library in 1960 by the now-100-year-old Glen Dawson), a diary written by a Frenchman during the Gold Rush, an 18th century cookbook, and a book that was branded (!) to prevent theft (see photo).

The highlight of our visit, however, was the Charles Lummis collection of 1700 autographs, obtained from writers, artists, and other prominent people while Lummis was head librarian (1905-1910). On the special library stationery sent to them by Lummis, the recipients responded in a variety of ways, some with quotations, some with long explanations and some with original artwork (see photo).

After our visit, the group retired to the Biltmore for lunch and a discussion of what we had seen.

The creator of "Where the Wild Things Are" died Tuesday at a hospital in Danbury, Connecticut after suffering a stroke last Friday.  Maurice Sendak radically changed the children's literature genre. He also collaborated on numerous operas, films and TV programs. One of the highlights of my experience as a student at Brown University was briefly meeting Mr. Sendak when he came to the school to give a lecture. His outspoken nature was inspirational.
