Travis Louie is a revered figure in the contemporary art movement known as pop surrealism. His imaginary world is grounded in Victorian and Edwardian times and inhabited by human oddities, mythical beings, and otherworldly characters. Each portrait (in this case, Ornamental Boogie Man and Gardening Boogie Man) is accompanied by biographical or anecdotal text that encourages the viewer to look past the physical. These intimate revelations are what differentiate Louie’s strange visitors from everyday strangers encountered in the real world, whose individual oddities are either up for interpretation or stowed neatly out of sight. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this "Stars of Country Music" 24 x 30 inch artist proof which has been hand-signed by eighteen country-western music legends against the background of a superbly rendered gold record: Roy Acuff, Don Gibson, Ferlin Husky, Sonny James, Grandpa Jones, Minnie Pearl, Webb Pierce, Johnny Rodriguez, T. G. Shepard, The Statler Brothers (4 signatures), Hank Thompson, Porter Wagoner, Slim Whitman and Faron Young. The poster was produced in 1981 by the company Art Merchant. In Very Fine Condition. The edition was to have contained 1,000 numbered prints and 100 artist's proofs, but a snowstorm in Nashville curtailed the signing, with only 700 or so of the prints completed. Charles Gates Sheldon (1889 - 1960) is an artist best known for his pin-ups, Hollywood, and fashion drawings for magazines from about 1900 to the 1930s. He was one of the highest paid illustrators of his time and studied under the famed Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha in Paris. Collector's Shangri-La is proud to feature several newly acquired Sheldon originals including work from the Estate of Charles Martignette, collector, historian, and author of The Great American Pin-Up.

The Penultimate Baby Tattooville

We didn't know it until our farewell brunch, but Baby Tattooville 8 was the second-to-last Baby Tattooville ever. For the uninitiated, Baby Tattooville is a weekend-long event celebrating the contemporary art community held at the Mission Inn in Riverside, CA. Organized by Bob Self and Baby Tattoo Books, this year's contingent included artists Laurie Lee Brom, Brom, Jeff Soto, Eric Fortune, Brian Smith, Miss Mindy, Brandi Milne, Joe Sorren, Johnny "KMNDZ" Rodriguez, Tara McPherson, Bob Dob, Gris Grimly, Lola, and Rick O'Brien. Collector's Shangri-La has been fortunate to participate for the past four years, and we had an incredible time as always!
