Happy Valentine's Day! Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this R. Crumb Valentine Original Art (American Greetings, c. 1963). Underground cartoonist Robert Crumb got his first job as a professional artist in the fall of 1962, when he returned to Cleveland, doing color separations and art detail for American Greetings. A year later, he was promoted to the company's Hi-Brow department, designing humorous cards like the one offered here. The lettering and pupils of the birds are drawn on an acetate overlay, with most of the artwork on a 4 x 9.5 inch piece of bristol board. Other than some minor color loss from the background, the art is in Excellent condition. A signature was added later in the lower right corner. Happy birthday to legendary Superman artist Curt Swan (1920 - 1996)! Starting in the 1950s and by the middle 1960s, his version of the Man of Steel's world would remain the gold standard well into the 1980s. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this original Silver Age Curt Swan Superman artwork that was used for DC's line of temporary tattoos. We have all 6 varieties on a single board featuring 2 action images of Superman, the classic origin image of Superboy lifting a couch, a classic image of Supergirl and Superman in flight, Supergirl clothes shopping and Clark Kent getting hit in the head with a flower pot (an interesting choice indeed). Happy birthday to Popeye the Sailor Man, created by cartoonist E. C. Segar. Popeye first appeared in the daily King Features comic strip Thimble Theatre on January 17, 1929. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this original Bud Sagendorf artwork for the daily Popeye strip featuring Popeye, Olive Oyl, Wimpy, and a robot, ink on artist's cardstock, 18 x 5.5 inches, May 13, 1963, signed in the final panel. Sagendorf (1915 - 1994) took over Popeye following the death of Segar in 1938.  Matted and framed (no glass) to an overall size of 21.75 x 9.25 inches. In fine condition. Happy birthday to animator Richard Williams, best known as animation director on Disney/Amblin's Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988), his unfinished feature film The Thief and the Cobbler, and the animated sequences of What's New, Pussycat? (1965), The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968), and two of the Pink Panther films. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this Who Framed Roger Rabbit? production cel set-up. Original hand-painted 12-field production cel of Roger Rabbit over a photo background of Bob Hoskins as Eddie Valiant. A great classic Roger pose, matted and framed to 18.5 x 13.5 inches with Disney seal on the lower left corner and original certificate on the back. In Fine condition. Today marks the birthday of animator Fred "Tex" Avery (1908-1980), best known for creating the characters of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Droopy (who co-stars in this film), and Screwy Squirrel. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this original final animation drawing of the escaped convict Wolf  from the MGM cartoon Northwest Hounded Police (1946) directed by Tex Avery. This cartoon was ranked 28th on Jerry Beck's list of The 50 Greatest Cartoons and 27th on Cartoon Network's own list of Greatest 50 Cartoons. Very Fine condition. A few years back Morrison teamed up with Jane Wiedlin (rhythm guitarist and vocalist of the new wave band The Go-Go's) to create the rock and roll fantasy comic Lady Robotika. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this sexy print from the comic entitled "Machina Ex Femina" hand-signed in person by Wiedlin and artist Morrison. 11 x 17 inches on heavy stock paper. Farewell to actor Ken Weatherwax (1955 - 2014), best known as Pugsley Addams on the original The Addams Family television series. Weatherwax died from a heart attack at his home yesterday at the age of 59. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this autographed Charles Addams (1912 - 1988) limited edition print that reproduces one of his famous Addams Family cartoons from The New Yorker Magazine. Published in the late 1980s by the U.S. Historical Society in a hand-signed numbered edition of 500, these rarely surface on the open market. 16 x 20 inch print on heavy 80 lb paper. Happy 90th birthday to cartoonist Jack Davis, best known for his work at MAD Magazine. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this original pencil drawing by Davis for a print ad done for Group W's news service. Group W is an alternate name for the Westinghouse Broadcasting Company. The firm hired Davis to design several print ads for them, among them this one depicting a man nervously looking at his watch near a train track. A copy of the final ad is included, featuring the tagline "The commuter's best friend".  Approximately 7 x 9 inches. Fine condition. Authenticity guaranteed for life.

Remembering Carl Barks - Collector's Treasure of the Day

Today marks the birthday of Carl Barks (1901 - 2000), the Disney Studio illustrator and comic book creator who invented Duckburg and many of its inhabitants, such as Scrooge McDuck, the Beagle Boys, and Gyro Gearloose. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this set of two limited edition art prints of cartoons drawn by Carl Barks before he joined the Walt Disney Studio in 1935. Both are numbered "114/120" and signed in full by Carl Barks below the image. The set was published by Another Rainbow for the International Museum of Cartoon Art. Included are the Museum's numbered Certificate of Authenticity and envelope in which the set was distributed. On the back of each print is a label that states: "this drawing, submitted to Disney's in 1935 helped get me hired. Carl Barks." Blue and black ink on two 10.5 x 14inch heavyweight paper sheets. Eisner popularized the term "graphic novel", and the comics industry Eisner Award is named in his honor. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this signed and numbered variant printing of the official poster of Will Eisner's career retrospective at the Museum of Cartoon Art from 1988.
