Farewell Comics Legend Dick Ayers - Collector's Treasure of the Day

Avengers #1 Re-Creation Original Art Signed by Dick Ayers
Farewell to comic artist Dick Ayers (1924-2014), who passed away on Sunday at his home in NY less than a week after his 90th birthday. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this wonderful recreation by Ayers of the cover art for Avengers #1. Ayers was the original inker for the classic cover, so this is just about as close as a collector is likely to get to the fantasy of hanging this grail on their wall. Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, Ant-Man, and the Wasp came together as the "Earth's Mightiest Super-Heroes" in battle against the power of Loki for the very first time in this historic image and it is among the most recognizable images of Marvel's Silver Age. Ayers was one of the most prolific artists at Marvel during the explosion of the early 1960s, not only acting as one of the primary inkers on Jack Kirby's pencils, but also producing his own art on runs like the Human Torch series in Strange Tales. This art is signed by Ayers in the lower margin and has an image area of approximately 12 x 18 inches. Excellent condition. COA.

Spotlight on the Father of Lowbrow Art Robert Williams - SDCC 2013 Exclusives

Robert Williams at the Gentle Giant Booth San Diego Comic-Con 2013
I had the pleasure of chatting with Robert Williams last weekend at San Diego Comic-Con. We had worked together some years back when I had created a line of condoms with packaging featuring the designs of artists like Williams, Coop, Peter Bagge, Ron English, Johnny Ryan, Peter Kuper, Trevor Brown, and Winston Smith. In the late 1960s Robert joined the ranks at Zap Comix where he created the seminal Underground Comix anti-hero, Coochy Cooty. In 1994 he co-founded Juxtapoz magazine which celebrates alternative and underground contemporary art.
