Happy Valentine's Day

Greeting Card Illustration Original Art Signed by Robert Crumb
Happy Valentine's Day! Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this R. Crumb Valentine Original Art (American Greetings, c. 1963). Underground cartoonist Robert Crumb got his first job as a professional artist in the fall of 1962, when he returned to Cleveland, doing color separations and art detail for American Greetings. A year later, he was promoted to the company's Hi-Brow department, designing humorous cards like the one offered here. The lettering and pupils of the birds are drawn on an acetate overlay, with most of the artwork on a 4 x 9.5 inch piece of bristol board. Other than some minor color loss from the background, the art is in Excellent condition. A signature was added later in the lower right corner. Authenticity guaranteed for life by Collector's Shangri-La.

Happy Birthday to Underground Cartoonist Robert Crumb

Monster Greeting Cards Illustration Original Art Signed by Robert Crumb
Happy birthday to underground comic artist R. Crumb, well known for his countercultural characters Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural, his "Keep on Truckin'" strip, and his work for Zap Comix and Weirdo.  Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this early Monster Greeting Cards original art. "You Look Like a Million Dollars... All Green and Wrinkled!" Every kid in the neighborhood loved these wacky cards, with a nice illustration on the front and a "treated" photo of a girl or guy on the back with a zinger punch line. Robert did these card illustrations while moonlighting for Woody Gelman's Topps Gum Company in New York. This original art from #33 is in mixed media on a card measuring approximately 3.5 x 5 inches.
