The band took its self-mocking name from the publishing term "remaindered book," a work of which the unsold remainder of the publisher's stock of copies is sold at a reduced price.  The caricature of the band was created in 2003 by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist David Horsey and is signed by members Stephen King, Amy Tan, Dave Barry, Scott Turow, Mitch Albom, Greg Iles, Matt Groening, Roy Blount Jr., James McBride, Ridley Pearson, Sam Barry and Kathi Kamen Goldmark.
