Happy Valentine's Day

Greeting Card Illustration Original Art Signed by Robert Crumb

Happy Valentine's Day! Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this R. Crumb Valentine Original Art (American Greetings, c. 1963). Underground cartoonist Robert Crumb got his first job as a professional artist in the fall of 1962, when he returned to Cleveland, doing color separations and art detail for American Greetings. A year later, he was promoted to the company's Hi-Brow department, designing humorous cards like the one offered here. The lettering and pupils of the birds are drawn on an acetate overlay, with most of the artwork on a 4 x 9.5 inch piece of bristol board. Other than some minor color loss from the background, the art is in Excellent condition. A signature was added later in the lower right corner. Authenticity guaranteed for life by Collector's Shangri-La.

Happy Birthday Peter Bagge

Collector's Shangri-La Fine Art Giclée Print by Peter Bagge

Happy birthday to cartoonist Peter Bagge, best known for the 1990s comic book series Hate, which followed the exploits of the slacker ne'er-do-well Buddy Bradley (and managed to show probably the truest representation of Seattle during the "grunge" boom and bust). But the Buddy Bradley saga is only a small part of Bagge's oeuvre, which saw its first glory days in R. Crumb's Weirdo Magazine (which he edited for several issues) and continues to expand to this day as he appears in Reason and MAD Magazine. This fine art giclée print entitled Collector's Shangri-La is printed with archival inks on museum-quality fine art paper. Select from 8.5 x 11 inches or 13 x 19 inches. Mint condition.

Happy Birthday Travis Louie

Boogie Men Original Art Signed by Travis Louie

Happy birthday to contemporary artist Travis Louie, a revered figure in the pop surrealism movement. His imaginary world is grounded in Victorian and Edwardian times and inhabited by human oddities, mythical beings, and otherworldly characters. Each portrait (in this case, Ornamental Boogie Man and Gardening Boogie Man) is accompanied by biographical or anecdotal text that encourages the viewer to look past the physical. These intimate revelations are what differentiate Louie’s strange visitors from everyday strangers encountered in the real world, whose individual oddities are either up for interpretation or stowed neatly out of sight. Abnormality is normal, it is simply a matter of whether it exists on a sleeve or in a closet. Approximately 11 x 14 inches. Graphite on paper. Hand-signed by Travis Louie. Authenticity guaranteed for life by Collector's Shangri-La.

Few people knew Hunter S. Thompson as well as Ralph Steadman did. The Joke's Over is a no-holds-barred memoir that tells of their unique collaboration that documented the turbulent years of the civil-rights movement, the Nixon years, and Watergate. When Thompson committed suicide in 2005, it was the end of a friendship that was defined by both betrayal and understanding.
