Happy Valentine's Day! Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this R. Crumb Valentine Original Art (American Greetings, c. 1963). Underground cartoonist Robert Crumb got his first job as a professional artist in the fall of 1962, when he returned to Cleveland, doing color separations and art detail for American Greetings. A year later, he was promoted to the company's Hi-Brow department, designing humorous cards like the one offered here. The lettering and pupils of the birds are drawn on an acetate overlay, with most of the artwork on a 4 x 9.5 inch piece of bristol board. Other than some minor color loss from the background, the art is in Excellent condition. A signature was added later in the lower right corner. Happy birthday to actor James Dean (1931 - 1955), who starred in only three films before his premature death: Rebel Without A Cause, East of Eden, and Giant. Our Collector's Treasure of the Day is this wonderful piece of history from James Dean's high school!  His yearbook titled "Black And Gold 1948" contains 64 slick pages published by the Journalism Department of Fairmount High School Fairmount, Indiana. Next to last page is titled "Autographs" with numerous signatures, including Jim "Rack" Dean. Dean earned the nickname "Rack" for helping his uncle rack up the balls at the local pool hall. James Dean appears in several photos, including individual photos and as a member of the basketball team ("made a fine showing on the second team last year and as guard this year on the first"). Most telling, however, is his appearance (in glasses!) in a group photo showing the members of the class play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, in which Dean played the role of Otis Skinner. Cover has some dust soil and light wear around edges and has pulled totally loose from insides. Overall cover VG, contents Exc. with nice signature.
